Jim's mission is unifying humanity. With his website and his travel engagements, he brings people from different cultures together, thus establishing worldwide friendships and mutual understanding. Although he is a monkey, Jim has a good eye for the things we humans seem to be missing. He knows that if we know more about each other, communicate and make friends, we can overcome cultural barriers and release an enormous amount of positive energy.
Jim has decided to become the World Ambassador of Humanity and dedicate his time to helping us make this world a better place, a little bit at a time. He loves to travel and to explore new parts of the world, because he finds that his experiences help broaden his horizons. Jim is a happy and healthy monkey. He realizes that he is lucky, and he wants to help those who might be less fortunate, struck by serious illness, unable to help themselves. He invites everybody to join him and help him in his mission.
JimMonkey.com will donate 50 % of all revenue generated with Jim Monkey, from donations, advertising, Jim's Forum and Jim's Marketplace, to charitable organizations engaged in childhood cancer research and treatment and in finding a cure for cystic fibrosis. Selecting the most appropriate charities to contribute to is an ongoing process. The names of the accredited organizations we choose, along with the actual amounts donated, will be published on our website.
Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is an inherited chronic disease. It affects the lungs and the digestive system. A defective gene and its protein product cause the body to produce thick mucus that clogs the lungs and leads to life-threatening lung infections. It can also obstruct the pancreas and stop natural enzymes from helping the body break down and absorb food.
People with CF may suffer from poor weight gain, chronic coughing, frequent lung infections, and extreme shortness of breath. Worsening of lung diseases and breathing problems may require patients to use breathing masks. Some patients say they feel "like breathing through a straw". In some cases, a lung transplant may be required.
In the 1950s, most children with cystic fibrosis died before the age of 5. Today, thanks to advanced research, medical treatment and therapy, the median survival age for people with this disease is nearly 37 years. But only a good 40 % of the CF patient population is age 18 or older. About 1,000 new cases of cystic fibrosis are diagnosed in the USA each year.
About 30,000 children and adults in the United States and about 70,000 people worldwide have CF. CF is a rare disease; that is why it is still not commonly known. But every single person in the world living with CF deserves that we help them together with all CF organizations to fight the disease.
Cancer is the most frequent cause of disease-related death in children in the USA. Here, more than 14,000 children and adolescents are diagnosed with cancer each year. That makes about 40 new young cancer patients every day. Currently, there are about 30-40,000 children and adolescents being treated for cancer in the USA. Almost 3,000 children die from cancer in the USA each year.
Worldwide, there are an estimated 160,000 children with cancer, according to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (2002). About 90,000 are likely to die from their disease.
The most common childhood cancers are leukemia and cancers of the brain and central nervous system.
Many children who do survive cancer suffer from chronic health conditions or life-threatening or severe side effects from either the disease process or aggressive, even toxic treatments. Side effects include, for example, heart failure, kidney failure, lung damage, secondary cancers, infertility, hearing loss, or growth deficits.
Together with accredited childhood cancer charities, we intend to raise money to develop new treatments for children and support vital childhood cancer research. We also wish to help fund organizations which provide emotional and psychological support for children with cancer, their parents and siblings. Every child in the world suffering from cancer deserves our support.
Jim's website addresses all kinds of people. Originally, Jim's founders had intended to address people who love to travel, people who want to make new friends and get to know others, people who wish to engage in a good cause and help others, people who are interested in education, and anybody who thinks positive and is looking to be part of something positive. They quickly found that this target group is not only huge, but also dynamic, vivid and exciting.
The friends of Jim Monkey turned out to be young backpackers, bikers as well as families who were looking for a fun leisure activity for their kids. As it turns out, they are also companies who take the words "social responsibility" seriously, those who proudly wear "Be the change you wish to see in the world" t-shirts or other people with a nurturing and productive attitude. They are bloggers and website publishers with travel, health, fitness, educational, communications and e-business sites, monkey or stuffed animal fans, students, teachers, business people, people of all ages and all kinds of professions and interests, cultures and traditions, continents and countries, religions and languages.
All of them seem to have one thing in common—a spark deep inside that is waiting to be ignited, a flame for Jim to carry.
